Dr. Ezekiel Mupere
Ezekiel Mupere MBChB, MMed (Paed), MS., PhD (Epi-Bio) is the Head of Paediatrics and Child Health Department at the University. He teaches Paediatrics, Child Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics to undergraduates in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) and postgraduates at Master of Medicine (M.Med), Medical Doctorate and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Dr Mupere trained at Makerere University in Uganda where he attained the MBChB and M.Med in Paediatrics & Child Health. Following his exemplary performance as a young researcher, Dr. Mupere was awarded a fellowship by the Fogarty AIDS International Training Research Program (AITRP) grant # TW-00011 at Case Western Reserve University Cleveland Ohio, USA where he attained, in addition, a Masters of Science and PhD in Epidemiology & Biostatistics. Dr. Mupere worked as a Medical Doctor in several general and regional hospitals in Uganda for 8 years prior to joining Makerere University in April 2005.
Dr. Mupere’s research interests focus on nutrition epidemiology at individual and population levels; infectious diseases – HIV/TB and vaccine-preventable diseases, sepsis; lung health; child development and behavior. His current research grants among others as site Principal Investigator include: Grant # OPP1138537 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Understanding outcomes of acutely ill undernourished children; NIH/NICHD # R01-HD092391 Optimizing Benefits While Reducing Risks of Iron in Malaria-Endemic Areas; and The role of milk protein and whey permeate in the growth and development of stunted children: a randomized controlled trial in Eastern Uganda.
Dr. Mupere is an expert epidemiologist for Makerere University Uganda-Case Western Reserve University Research Collaboration. He provides technical lead support with the Ministry of Health (MOH) in guideline development for the management of acute malnutrition in Uganda and Expanded Program in immunization evaluation. He is a member of the Nutrition technical working group at the MOH. He is a member of the Childhood TB group by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease; East African Nutrition Epidemiology Network; Uganda Paediatric and Medical Associations; and Makerere University School of Biomedical Sciences Research Ethical Committee.
