Makerere University Hospital received funding from Wellcome Leap, In Utero Program to support implementation of the “Stillbirth in High Burden Settings: Ample Room for Improvement Using Biomarkers and Ultrasound Technologies” (iTECH) project. The iTECH project aims to develop novel clinical tools for use to diagnose and manage high-risk pregnant women and reduce the burden of stillbirths in Uganda, sub-Saharan Africa, and globally. Makerere University Hospital seeks to recruit a suitable candidate for the position of Biostatistician.

Job Summary:
The Biostatistician will provide support to the research team by ensuring that all data is reviewed at all times and conform to the Investigators’ specifications. He/she will be required to carry out statistical analysis and generate reports relating to the study findings. He/she must be a diverse individual, showing broad technical, organizational, and communication skills and be capable of working individually and in a team environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with principal investigators in developing study methodology, sampling strategies, data collection and management, and statistical approaches for research protocols.
- Uses a variety of advanced statistical software, methods, and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret research data to derive useful information for research data; advises and assists in the development of inferences and conclusions, as appropriate.
- Advise the data manager on procedures to oversee the collection, cleaning, validation and maintenance of high-quality research data.
- Write and execute statistical methods and analysis sections of protocols, reports and peer-reviewed publications.
- Design templates and develop specifications for status reports, analysis tables, graphs, and data listings for use in research publications and ad hoc reporting.
- Participate in the implementation of research and data analysis capacity-building initiatives for project staff.
- Reviews and analyzes safety reporting and biomarker analyses.
- Provide training for less experienced employees engaged in the collection, tabulation and analysis of statistical research data.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- MUST have a Master’s degree in Biostatistics or Statistics or Statistical Epidemiology or related field, with significant experience (5 years or more) in Medical Sciences or public health research and data analysis.
- A PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics or related field will be an added advantage
- The candidate MUST have a strong understanding of databases and data analysis especially prediction modelling.
- Up to date training in Good Clinical Practice and Human Subjects Protection Research.
- Knowledge of common statistical analysis software, preferably a competent user of R
- Good analytical thinking and ability to interpret epidemiological data
- Ability to communicate statistical concepts to non-specialists is a must.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to fully grasp the complexity of data management.
- Possess excellent troubleshooting skills.
- Able to work under pressure.
