SPARCO

Sickle Pan African Consortium Uganda (SPARCO) Strengthening Capacity for Clinical Care Research and training in Sickle Cell Disease.(SCRT) project.

Summary of Overall Project Objective: The project goal is to improve the health outcomes of individuals with SCD disease in Uganda through implementation of evidence-based interventions.

What are the major goals of the project?

The major goals of the project include the following;

1)To develop a centralized, electronic, patient consented haemoglobinopathy registry at Mulago National Referral Sickle Cell Clinic.

2)To improve SCD patient outcomes in Uganda by establishing regional SCD standards of care in three priority areas;– Health Maintenance and preventive chemotherapy, Screening for complications and  Managing acute complications.

3)To advance SCD related research by conducting cohort studies and implementation science studies on patients enrolled in the SCD registry.

ENRICH

Enhancing Research Capacity for Sickle Cell Disease and related Non-Communicable Diseases across the lifespan in Uganda (ENRICH)

Summary of Overall Project Objective: The Overall Project Objective is to enhance the Sickle Cell Disease associated Non Communicable Disease Research Capacity in Uganda.

What are the major goals of the project?

The major goals of the project are to;

  1. To train a multi-disciplinary team of research scientists with expertise to assess the magnitude; pathophysiology, interventions for prevention, treatment, and control of SCD and related NCDs across the lifespan.
  2. To increase SCD associated NCD research capacity across the lifespan.
  3. To strengthen local and regional partnerships for advancing SCD and associated NCD research training and advocacy.

The HEPI award to Prof. Kiguli; Health Professions Education and Training for Strengthening the Health System and Services in Uganda, will help to scale up the training of health professionals through a partnership between medical and nursing education institutions in Uganda and the US. Professor Kiguli is the Principal Investigator of a team of Health Professionals from the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, with partnership from Busitema University, Kabale University, Clarke’s International University, Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery, Yale University and Johns Hopkins University. Behavioral and Social Science Research (BSSR) in HIV Training Program

The Makerere University – Behavioral and Social Science Research (BSSR) in HIV Training Program, is a five-year project, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institutes of Health on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Fogarty International Center (FIC). The major goal is to strengthen Behavioral Social Science scientific leadership and expertise in HIV research at Makerere University in order to address the evolving challenges in HIV care and prevention in Uganda.
