From June 2 to 27, 2025, Mangheni Victorious, a final-year medical student at Makerere University College of Health Sciences, participated in a prestigious exchange program at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Hosted at Regions Hospital and the University of Minnesota Medical Center – Fairview, Mangheni undertook a clinical elective in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Over four weeks, she scrubbed into more than 25 surgical procedures, attended outpatient clinics, and participated in ward rounds—gaining hands-on skills in trauma surgery, microsurgery, wound care, and reconstructive techniques.
Beyond the hospital, the exchange offered rich cultural and social experiences—from visiting the Mall of America and the Weisman Art Museum to attending community events like a Ugandan traditional wedding introduction in Minnesota. She also built lasting professional and personal connections with doctors, fellow students from around the world, and the Ugandan diaspora.
Reflecting on the experience, Mangheni described it as “a defining chapter” in her medical journey, highlighting the value of global exposure, mentorship, and cultural exchange in shaping well-rounded healthcare professionals.
This program, facilitated by the Makerere University International Office and the University of Minnesota’s Global Medical Education and Research Program, continues to strengthen academic and cultural ties while preparing medical students to serve in an increasingly interconnected world.
