Epilepsy is a significant global health burden, associated with high levels of discrimination and stigma that, alongside other barriers, limit access to medical care for those affected. A comprehensive understanding of epilepsy’s characteristics, comorbidities, and risk factors is crucial for developing effective preventive strategies and interventions.
The Makerere University College of Health Sciences, in partnership with Duke University, USA, is conducting a national research study on epilepsy. This collaborative effort brings together leading Ugandan researchers in neurology and psychology with international experts from the USA in neurology and neurosurgery. The study aims to explore epilepsy across all age groups in Uganda by clinically characterizing its features, comorbidities, and risk factors, with a particular focus on stigma among adolescents.
