The Makerere University School of Medicine Malaria Research Training Program, funded by the United States National Institutes of Health (Fogarty International Center) is a collaboration between Makerere University College of Health Sciences and the University of California San Francisco. The overall goal of this training program is to conduct independent and sustainable malaria research in order to address the challenges of malaria control in Uganda. The focus areas for this training program are: malaria epidemiology, translational research, genomics, bioinformatics, and implementation science.
The program is soliciting applications for research training positions (with a
focus on malaria research) in the following categories;
1. Post-doctoral training
2. PhD training
3. Master’s training in a health-related field
4. Implementation Science (ImS) fellowship
Criteria for Selection:
1. Post-Doctoral training (2 years of Training)
• Awarded/defended their PhD thesis not more than 5 years prior to submitting
their application
• Experience in malaria research or program activities
• Have a research concept with clear objectives addressing a malaria-related
problem. (2 pages)
• Have a clear short-term and long-term career development plan. (Max 2
pages for both)
• Must be either a junior faculty at Makerere University or a staff in a Malaria
research/ implementing project or working in a relevant program at the
Ministry of Health.
Successful candidates will have protected time and research funds to
work on their projects with support from a senior mentor.
2. PhD Training at Makerere University or at London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine (4 years)
• Have a Master’s Degree in Health Sciences related field
• Experience in malaria research or programming activities
• Commitment to develop and maintain a productive career devoted to
Malaria research and demonstrate the potential to grow into an independent
scientist.
• Malaria-related research concept (2 pages)
• Plan for career development (2 pages)
• Must be either a junior faculty at Makerere University or a staff of a Malaria
research/ implementing project or working in a relevant program at the
Ministry of Health.
• Must be ready to start on a PhD Program at the Clinical Epidemiology Unit,
Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) or a 6-week
course on Observational and Experimental Epidemiology by The University
of Bergen and MakCHS-School of Public Health.
3. Master’s Degree
• Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field.
• Should be in their second/final year of Master’s training program at Makerere
University.
• Have a malaria-related research concept (2 pages) or proposal.
• Must be a trainee at Makerere University OR An employee of research and
Malaria control organizations.
4. Implementation Science (ImS) fellowship
Trainees under this fellowship program will either undertake a one-year online certificate
program in implementation science offered by University of California San Francisco between
September 2023 and June 2024 or the 11-week online course on the Fundamentals of
Implementation Science offered by University of Washington between September 2023
and December 2023. These are part-time programs consisting of a series of online
courses focused on theories and methods relevant to the design of strategies to facilitate
uptake of health-related interventions. All courses have minimum requirements related
to turning in assignments and providing peer feedback on assignments.
Upon completion of any of the above ImS programs, scholars will be able to:
(a) Identify appropriate health interventions to translate into practice.
(b) Design effective and sustainable implementation strategies.
(c) Design comprehensive evaluations of intervention implementation strategies.
(d) Develop fundable implementation science grant proposals.
Eligibility for the course will require:
• Having a Master’s Degree in a health-related field
• A good research training and publication background in a malaria-related field
• Must be a junior faculty at Makerere University, a staff of a malaria research
institution OR an employee of the Uganda Malaria Control Program or a Post-
Doc and PhD student whose research is focused on Implementation Science.
