Background: The Makerere University- Behavioral and Social Science Research (BSSR) in HIV Training Program, is a five-year project, funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institutes of Health on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and Fogarty International Center (FIC). The major goal is to strengthen Behavioral Social Science scientific leadership and expertise in HIV research at Makerere University in order to address the evolving challenges in HIV care and prevention in Uganda.
Eligibility for training
- Enrolled on / completed a master’s degree in Sociology, Gender Studies, MSc. Clinical Psychology, M.A Counselling or any Biomedical /Health related field.
- Enrolled on PhD training at Makerere University with an HIV-related research project with BSS component.
- A junior faculty at MakCHS or MakCHUSS with a demonstrated interest in BSSR research.
- A staff of an HIV research/ implementing project at Makerere University or the Ministry of Health with a demonstrated interest in BSSR research.
- Availability for online or in-person attendance of a maximum of 15 lectures in 2-3-hourly sessions.
The program will offer four BSS-specific courses and below are the major objectives and the tentative dates for each of the courses;
1) Social Determinants of Health (15th May 2023 – 31st May 2023)-confirmed dates
This course introduces learners to the concept of Social Determinants of Health (SDH) and related concepts affecting HIV prevention, care, treatment, and support services.
2) Social Theory, HIV and Health Course (24th July 2023 – 11th July 2023)-tentative dates
The course will acquaint trainees with the major areas of inquiry, discourse, and the work of influential researchers in the fields of anthropology and sociology of health, while focusing on HIV/AIDS
3) Theories of Behavior Change and Practice (4th September 2023 to 16th December 2023)-tentative dates
This course will provide an overview of the psychosocial determinants of behavioral risk factors that affect health within theories, models and frameworks of health-related behavior.
4) Research Methodology (12th February 2024 -15th March 2024)-tentative dates
The course will focus on the design and implementation of research that combines qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis of Behavioral studies.
