Background:
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in September 2015 as a set of 17 goals with over 169 targets to end poverty globally over the next 15 years, with a focus on developing countries. The SDGs differ from the previous Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in that they can be adapted by members into their national objectives and performance is tracked with 232 unique indicators.
However, low awareness and poor attitudes towards the SDGs among stakeholders such as students, the public, civil society, and government officials has slowed progress towards achieving the goals by 2030. To address this, an online learning course on innovation for sustainable health has been developed in collaboration with Karolinska Institutet and Makerere University’s virtual Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Health (CESH) for professionals in the health system in Uganda, Somalia and DRC, with the goal of introducing concepts of sustainable health, SDGs, Innovation management and implementation science to stakeholders to accelerate achievement of the SDG targets by Uganda and African countries.
