Makerere University College of Health Sciences proudly recognizes Kukunda Pavin, a medical student from the School of Medicine, for successfully completing a four-week international clinical elective at Des Moines University Clinic – Family Medicine Department in Iowa, USA.
The elective provided a unique opportunity to explore outpatient family medicine, preventive care, chronic disease management, osteopathic manual medicine (OMM), and the use of advanced electronic health record systems.
“This experience transformed my perspective on patient-centered care and preventive medicine. I return inspired to integrate continuity of care, preventive health strategies, and collaborative teamwork into my practice in Uganda,” Pavin reflected.

Cultural Exchange and Networking
Beyond the clinic, Pavin engaged in rich cultural experiences including visits to the Des Moines Botanical Gardens, the Iowa State Capitol, and American Independence Day celebrations. The program also fostered professional and personal relationships with physicians, fellow international students, and clinical staff.
Reflections and Impact
The elective highlighted the importance of teamwork in healthcare delivery, interprofessional respect, and the value of preventive and continuous care in improving health outcomes. Lessons from this experience will be shared with peers and applied in Ugandan healthcare settings.
