Scope Preamble
Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS), Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics in collaboration with the University of Liverpool (UoL) received funding from the UK Medical Research Council to build research capacity in Drug Safety Science in Uganda. This project seeks to develop a robust research programme to strengthen local capacity to identify and address the challenges of drug utilization and safety and promote the translation of research findings into drug-related policy and practice in collaboration with National Drug Authority, Uganda and UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Research modalities will span the biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, social sciences, implementation science and policy-related disciplines. In particular, the program will prioritize the fields of pharmacovigilance, pharmacoepidemiology, clinical pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, clinical medicine in relation to drug use and/or safety, aspects of social sciences that address drug use and safety, and other disciplines within the realm of drug utilization and safety. Key areas include the use of mHealth tools to promote drug safety, adverse drug reactions, adverse events following immunization, medication errors, patterns of medication use, antimicrobial resistance, substandard and falsified medicines, and other drug-related issues.
Purpose
Applications are invited for a Manuscript Writing Workshop due on or around 19-21 June 2023 at Makerere University College of Health Sciences. This workshop will be conducted by senior faculty at MakCHS and UoL. It will be an intensive program that requires a significant commitment of time and effort prior to, during and after the workshop. The goal is for all workshop participants to complete a research manuscript and submit it to a PubMed-listed peer-reviewed journal within 3 months. Selection
Applications will be reviewed and scored and the applicant might be required to provide additional information by responding to subsequent questions within 2 weeks. Subsequently, the top candidates will be selected and will receive an official invitation to participate. This will be a highly competitive process and the workshop will be limited to the best candidates.
Timelines
The key deadlines are as follows:
- 22 May 2023: Initial application due
- 31 May 2023: Initial faculty review of application/feedback sent to applicants
- 2 June 2023: Responses/revised applications due
- 9 June 2023: Final scoring and invitations sent to selected applicants
- 19-21 June 2023: Workshop at MakCHS
- 21 June 2023: Complete manuscript outline due
- 19 July 2023: Complete first draft of manuscript due
- 20 September 2023: Final manuscript and manuscript journal submission due
Eligibility criteria
Please carefully review the eligibility criteria below. In particular, please note that only candidates who have completed all research data collection will be eligible for this workshop. Applicants with draft manuscripts, theses/dissertations, research reports, etc will have a competitive advantage. Also, note that if you are selected, you will be assigned senior faculty from MakCHS and/or UoL to work closely with you during and after the workshop to help you finalize your paper. These faculty mentors are expected to fulfil all the four ICMJE authorship criteria listed here:
Therefore, you will also be expected to include your assigned writing workshop mentors as co-authors on your paper.
