The MUMSA Sports Gala
Each year, the Makerere University Medical Students’ Association (MUMSA) organizes a Sports Gala, which stands as one of the most eagerly anticipated events at the College of Health Sciences. A diverse array of sports and games are meticulously arranged, including football, volleyball, athletics, FIFA, chess, and scrabble, among others. The competitions are structured according to the various MBChB classes, ranging from Year 1 to Year 5.
In addition to the sporting events, the Gala also features a range of health-related activities. These activities include blood donation drives, HIV screening sessions, and aerobics, all aimed at promoting health and wellness among participants and attendees.
The MUMSA Internal Medical Quiz
MUMSA organizes an internal medical quiz that draws participants from all five MBChB cohorts at the medical school. The participants are randomly assigned into groups of five, ensuring that each group includes one member from each year. The quiz encompasses a wide range of subjects, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, anaesthesia, public health, emergency medicine, forensics, general knowledge, and logic.
From this Internal Medical Quiz, the most outstanding participants are selected to represent the university at the National Medical Quiz.
“MUMSA Inspires” Project
MUMSA INSPIRES is a project dedicated to providing career guidance to medical students, helping them navigate the various specialties and fields within the medical profession. This initiative also serves to bridge the gap between students and our esteemed lecturers, professors, and other well-established doctors who have quietly inspired the younger generation. It creates a platform where these experienced professionals can openly share their life skills, experiences, and career advancement insights with students aspiring to follow similar paths.
In addition to supporting medical students, MUMSA also extends its outreach to secondary schools, offering career guidance to learners who dream of pursuing professions in the health sciences at the university level.
The MUMSA Students' Spotlight
This initiative is designed to recognize and celebrate the exceptional achievements of outstanding medical students. It aims to provide these students with a prestigious platform where they can share their personal stories, experiences, and skills. By doing so, they have the opportunity to inspire and motivate their peers, fostering a culture of excellence and aspiration within the medical community. This platform not only highlights their academic and professional accomplishments but also allows them to discuss the challenges they have overcome and the lessons they have learned along the way. Through this initiative, we hope to create a supportive environment where students can learn from one another and strive towards their own goals with renewed vigour and determination.
The Annual Finalists’ Dinner
MUMSA organizes a grand dinner to honour and bid farewell to the MBChB finalists, marking the culmination of their rigorous five-year journey through medical school. This celebratory event is not only a time for reflection and recognition of the hard work and dedication that these students have demonstrated, but it also serves several important purposes, such as fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among the graduating class and offering a platform for distinguished faculty members and guest speakers to impart wisdom and advice to the new graduates.
Souvenir Shop
MUMSA operates a vibrant souvenir shop that offers a variety of branded items, including hooded jumpers, round neck shirts, and collar T-shirts.
The souvenir shop plays a crucial role in fostering a sense of pride and belonging among the students. By purchasing and wearing these branded items, students can visibly express their affiliation with MUMSA, thereby strengthening their connection to the association.
The shop also serves as an effective tool for enhancing the publicity and visibility of MUMSA, besides generating revenue for the association.
