PhD Student Position Available at Makerere University

Exciting Opportunity in Pediatric HIV Research!

Makerere University in collaboration with the SUPPORT project (funded by EDCTP3) is offering a PhD student position for a highly motivated individual to develop their thesis in the field of pediatric infectious diseases. This opportunity is part of the action ‘Supporting the next generation of African researchers on preventing HIV pediatric mortality through a training network’. This program provides a multidisciplinary, international, and competitive training environment focused on pediatric research.

Research Project Description

The primary goal of this research project is to enhance the identification of children at higher risk of post-discharge mortality. The research will involve:

  1. Risk Factor Analysis: Clinical, epidemiological, and laboratory variables will be examined to identify key risk factors associated with post-discharge mortality. An easy-to-use calculator will be developed to assist clinicians in identifying patients at higher risk.
  2. Severity Biomarker Evaluation: The performance of a novel “severity biomarker” will be analyzed as a predictor of mortality in this population. This biomarker aims to significantly improve the ability of clinicians to prioritize high-risk patients and will complement the clinical calculator.

Project Title: Evaluation of the Accuracy of a New “Severity Biomarker” to Predict Post Discharge Mortality (PDM) in a Cohort of CLHIV and Other Risk Factors
